Excellent monument which is well presented and which tells its story very well. An important part of national history.

St Andrews Castle is one of those places that sounds promising on paper but, in reality, leaves you wondering if you should’ve just gone for a walk along the beach instead. The price is fairly modest, but let’s be honest, most of the castle is viewable from the outside. So, unless you’re really into looking at ancient ruins from a distance, it might not be the best use of your time.
If you’re on the smaller side, you’ll have the exclusive privilege of squeezing into the mines beneath the castle. If you happen to be a bit more generously framed (like me), you’ll be left standing at the entrance, watching your friends venture into what might as well be a glorified tunnel. Let’s just say, it’s not exactly the experience they make it out to be on the brochures.
The castle’s got a beach nearby, which is nice if you fancy some seaside views. But, after walking around the ruins, it becomes clear that the real highlight of this place is the coastline, not the ruins themselves. It’s a tiny site and, frankly, not worth the detour unless you’re in the area for something else.
That said, St Andrews itself is absolutely charming. The town is a gem, with its cobbled streets, vibrant atmosphere, and—of course—its world-famous university. If you’re in the area, definitely explore the town, but don’t feel like you have to spend too much time at the castle. It’s fine for a quick visit, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it again.

Great castle. Friendly staff. Good displays. Disappointing the mines aren't open. Hopefully they will be soon. Unfortunately historic Scotland isn't renound for it's speed in these things.

A ruined castle, it is what it says on the tin!
Nice friendly staff and an interesting exhibition with details of the troubled and sometimes brutal history of the castle.
Unfortunately a part of the castle and the "mines" used to attack and defend the castle were closed to allow necessary conservation work to be undertaken.

Wasn't really worth the stop in the wind and rain. Nice views but unless you have the explorer pass and it's a nice day it's not really worth it compared to other places. Wouldn't recommend going out of your way for it.

Beautiful ruins of the ancient castle in St. Andrews. This one has a different experience since you can go through the tunnel used to defend the castle from its invaders.

A stunning location by the water, with exceptionally kept grounds. Friendly staff at the entrance helped with tickets which included an audio guide. Within walking distance of the cathedral as well
